Cost to Automate an Existing Driveway Gate in Arizona

By Frank Vargas · Security Door Gate & Fence · Scottsdale, AZ · November 2026

What it costs to add an automatic operator to the driveway gate you already have, what pushes that price up, and how to make sure every quote you get compares the same thing.

Who this guide is for: homeowners who already have a driveway gate and want to automate it. The prices below are for installing an operator on an existing swing or slide gate. If you need a new or custom driveway gate built, the price changes dramatically. See the section on custom gates below.

"How much does an automatic gate cost?" is the first question almost every homeowner asks us, and it is a fair one. I have installed and repaired gates across the Valley for 30 years, and the honest answer is that it depends on a handful of things you can understand before anyone comes to your house. This guide gives you real starting prices for putting an automatic operator on an existing gate, explains what changes the total, and shows you where the biggest savings and the biggest surprises usually are.

Starting Prices to Automate an Existing Gate in Arizona

Existing residential gate typeOperator installation starts at
Existing double swing (two-wing) gate$5,000
Existing slide gate$4,800

These are starting prices to install an operator on a standard residential gate you already own, in good working condition. Most projects cost more, depending on the factors below. We give firm pricing after seeing your property, because the same gate can cost very different amounts on different driveways.

Need a New or Custom Gate? The Price Changes Dramatically

The starting prices above do not include building or buying a gate. If you do not have a gate yet, or you want a custom design, the total will be far higher than the operator prices in this guide. A custom driveway gate is a separate project, and its cost depends on:

  • Design: a simple panel gate and a custom scroll, laser-cut, or wood-and-iron design are very different jobs.
  • Material: steel, aluminum, wrought iron, and wood all price differently.
  • Size and weight: wider and heavier gates need more material, stronger posts, and heavier hardware.
  • Posts, footings, and finish: structural work and powder coating add to the total.

Because custom gates vary so much, we price them only after an on-site visit and a design conversation. Learn more about our custom driveway gates, and plan to add the operator costs in this guide on top of the gate itself.

Swing Gate vs. Slide Gate Operators: What Each Involves

Double swing gateSlide gate

Starting price (operator)$5,000$4,800

If you already have a gate, its type is already decided: a swing gate gets a swing operator, and a slide gate gets a slide operator. We inspect the gate, posts, hinges or track, and the space around it before quoting, because an operator can only work reliably on a gate that is built and hung correctly.

What Pushes the Price Higher

  • Condition of your existing gate. A gate that sags, drags, or has worn hinges, wheels, or tracks may need repair before an operator can run it reliably.
  • Heavy or large gates. A wide opening or a solid steel gate needs a stronger operator and heavier hardware, and that costs more.
  • Accessories. Remotes, keypads, exit sensors, and video access control each add cost, and the more you add the higher the total.
  • Distance to power. If there is no power at the gate, getting it there is often the biggest line item. See the solar section below.
  • Slope and soil. A sloped drive or poor soil can require different operators, deeper footings, or extra work.
  • Safety devices. Photo eyes, loops, and edge sensors are part of doing the job right, and are required by the UL 325 safety standard that covers modern gate operators.
  • Permits and HOA approval. Some properties need permits or architectural approval first. See our guide to HOA garage door and gate rules in Arizona.

Solar vs. Running Power: Where You Can Save the Most

If power is not already at your gate, this is the decision that can change your budget more than any other.

OptionTypical added costNotes
Solar power$300 to $500No trenching and no electrician needed. Works well in Arizona sun.
Running power to the gate$2,000 to $3,000Requires a licensed electrician, trenching, and conduit.

Solar is a great option when there is no power at the site, and in Arizona the sun makes it practical for most gates. The tradeoff is that solar and battery systems depend on battery health, and heat shortens battery life, so replacement every two to three years is a good plan. Our gate troubleshooting guide covers battery failure, and our power outage guide explains what to expect when the grid or battery goes down.

Accessories: Where the Total Adds Up

The starting prices include a basic operator, and every residential operator we install comes with battery backup, so it keeps working through short power outages. Most homeowners add something on top of that, and the options matter:

  • Remotes: the simplest add-on, with more remotes costing more.
  • Keypads: let guests and family in with a code, and are very common.
  • Video access control: lets you see and talk to visitors from your phone or a screen. It adds cost, but many homeowners find it the most useful upgrade.
  • Exit sensor: opens the gate automatically when a vehicle approaches from inside the property, so family and guests can leave without a remote or keypad. It is one of the most convenient upgrades.

For homes that want visitor calling, cameras, or community-style access, see our gate access control comparison.

What a Good Gate Quote Should Include

Two quotes with different prices may not be for the same job. Before you compare, check that each one lists:

  1. Your existing gate's type, width, and weight, and any repairs it needs first
  2. Operator brand and model
  3. Safety devices, such as photo eyes and loops
  4. How power will reach the gate (existing, solar, or new run)
  5. Remotes, keypads, exit sensors, and access control included
  6. Permits, if needed, and who pulls them
  7. Warranty on parts and labor, in writing

Choose the contractor as carefully as the gate. See our guide on how to choose a garage door or gate repair company, including licensing, bonding, insurance, and red flags. The LiftMaster residential gate operator page is also useful for understanding what a properly installed operator needs.

Planning for Arizona Conditions

  • Heat: operators, boards, and batteries all work harder in summer, and batteries wear out sooner here.
  • Monsoon wind: a gate has to be built and anchored for gusts. See what monsoon wind and debris do to gates.
  • Wildlife: packrats and insects can damage control boxes. See gate repair in summer heat and wildlife.
  • Maintenance: plan for yearly checks and battery replacement every two to three years.

Cost to Automate an Existing Driveway Gate in Arizona FAQ

How much does it cost to automate an existing driveway gate in Arizona?

Automatic gate operator installation on an existing gate starts at about $5,000 for a residential double swing gate and about $4,800 for a slide gate. Total cost goes up with heavy or large gates and with accessories such as remotes, keypads, and video access control.

What if I need a new or custom driveway gate?

The prices in this guide are for adding an operator to a gate you already have. A new or custom gate is a separate project, and the total will be dramatically higher, depending on design, material, size, and posts. We price custom gates after an on-site visit.

How much does it cost to add solar power to a gate?

Solar typically adds about $300 to $500. Running power to a gate with a licensed electrician, including trenching, typically costs about $2,000 to $3,000, so solar can save a lot when there is no power at the gate.

What makes an automatic gate cost more?

Heavy or large gates, accessories like remotes, keypads, exit sensors and video access control, the distance to power, slope, safety devices, and any permits or HOA requirements.

Can you give me an exact price over the phone?

Not accurately. The same gate can cost very different amounts on different properties, so we give firm pricing after seeing the site. Call Charlie at (480) 548-0807 to schedule an on-site estimate.
